Why Mobile Dashboard Design Is Harder Than You Think
Dashboards are one of the most requested — and most over-designed — screens in product design. On desktop, you can spread data across a wide canvas. On mobile, you have roughly 375 × 812 pixels to communicate what matters most.
The challenge isn't showing data. It's showing the right data at the right time in a format users can scan in under 3 seconds.
After analyzing hundreds of dashboard screens in our library, we've identified the patterns and principles that separate useful dashboards from overwhelming ones.
1. Lead With the Single Most Important Metric
The best mobile dashboards don't try to show everything. They lead with one hero number — the metric the user cares about most — and make everything else secondary.
Apps that nail this:
- Stripe — revenue today is the first thing you see, large and center. Secondary metrics (payments, payouts) live below in smaller cards
- Shopify — total sales front and center with a trend sparkline, followed by orders and sessions
- Robinhood — portfolio value dominates the top half of the screen with a prominent gain/loss indicator
Design principle: Use typographic hierarchy aggressively. The hero metric should be 2-3x larger than supporting numbers. Color only the delta (green/red for change) to draw the eye.
2. Use Card-Based Layouts for Scannability
Cards create natural visual boundaries between data groups, making dashboards scannable rather than overwhelming.
Why cards work on mobile: Each card acts as a self-contained unit of information. Users can scan card titles to find what they need without reading every number. Cards also adapt well to different screen sizes and can be rearranged based on user priority.

- Square — sales, appointments, and inventory each get their own card with a clear title, key number, and optional trend indicator
- Google Analytics — modular cards for users, sessions, and events that can be customized and reordered
- HubSpot — CRM dashboard with deal pipeline, tasks, and activity cards in a scrollable layout
Implementation tips:
- Keep cards to 2-3 data points maximum — a card with 8 numbers is just a table in disguise
- Use consistent card heights within the same row for visual rhythm
- Add subtle shadows or borders to separate cards from the background, not from each other
3. Sparklines Over Full Charts
On mobile, full-sized charts with axes, labels, and legends consume too much space for the value they provide. Sparklines — tiny inline trend visualizations — communicate direction and velocity in a fraction of the space.
When to use sparklines vs. full charts:
- Sparkline: "Is this metric going up or down?" — trend direction is the primary question

Tip: Make sparklines tappable to reveal the full chart. This progressive disclosure pattern lets casual users scan quickly while giving power users access to detail.
4. Time Period Selectors Done Right
Almost every dashboard needs time filtering — today, this week, this month, custom range. The UX of this selector matters more than you'd think, because users switch time periods constantly.
Common patterns:
- Segmented control (Today | Week | Month | Year) — best for 3-5 options, always visible
- Dropdown — saves space but hides options, adds a tap
- Horizontal pill scroll — works well when you have many preset periods
Apps that handle this well:
- Shopify — segmented control at the top of the dashboard. Switching periods updates all cards simultaneously with smooth transitions
- Square — persistent date bar that follows scroll position, always accessible
Anti-pattern: Avoid putting the time selector inside a settings menu or behind a filter icon. If 80% of dashboard interactions start with "let me check last week's numbers," the time selector needs to be top-level and always visible.

- Square — alert indicators on cards with actionable items
Design principle: Use badges sparingly. If every card has a badge, none of them stand out. Reserve badges for genuinely actionable items, not informational updates.
